Better or just familiar

Seth Godin compares the leap from telegraph to phones. His point is that if Alexander Graham Bell tried making a better telegraph, the phone would never come to pass. The phone was fundamentally different in many ways. I’m sure at the time, people fought it, but once it reached critical mass it become unstoppable.

Most people mistake better with familiar. I’ve experienced this first hand with software. Customers want their old product but better. I say, the software’s problems are the software. Using the same logic as the guy ahead of you, will lead you down the same road; which in this case is losing a customer.
