Create the pie or just take a piece

In Seth Godin’s post Making vs. Taking, he posts two scenarios. One is the market creator and the other is second to the party. The best example I can think of is what McDonalds has done for fast food. They created and industry that Burger King and Wendy’s has benefited from.

Burger King is suffering today, but Wendy’s seems to be doing well. If you want to sound cliche’ you can say that these companies rode McDonalds coat tails.

Personally, there’s nothing wrong with being the second guy. What’s important is that you realize this and make decisions that supplement this position.

The problem with many businesses is that they try to be both, which is tough to do.
