The whole “Do what you love!” myth

Nothing is more overused or cliche when it comes to business than “do what you love.” You’ll get this advice from your uncle Harry, cousin Suzy and your neighbor Bob.

What they should tell you is to find some enjoyment in everything you do. This makes it easy to love what you do. If you can’t get to that point, just stop doing it and move on.

Art is more of an expression than it is an object. Is something commercial not art? Who are we to say? In the end, I don’t think art would even question itself.

When you see the starving artist, he/she is probably just a bad business man/woman. Any product without a business wrapped around it, is pretty much going to fail financially. There is a difference between suffering for your art and starving for it. Starving is not fun and I don’t recommend it.

Thinking in terms of art is on the possessive side. The key is to find a medium that exercises your creative energies. The paint, written word, song or dance is just the tool. The true art is the expression.

It’s too common for people to use their integrity as an artist as the excuse for not doing well financially. This is just an excuse.

Worry about getting people to like what you do and then you can start asking for something back. It’s not always money. It can be something else. Sometimes it’s better than money. Maybe this is the point of Seth Godin’s post: Maybe you can’t make money doing what you love
